The Village of Burk’s Falls is about to undergo some very dramatic changes over the 2018 and 2019 years.  In the fall of 2017, The Village announced two major projects that are currently underway and aim to breathe new life in to Ontario Street, the downtown core and the Magnetawan River waterfront area.  These improvements follow an ever growing list of improvements that have been happening over the last several years, which includes: the replacement of the Yonge Street Bridge (2016), the water tower (2016) and the Armstrong Bridge (2017), not to mention various water system and sidewalk improvement projects.

The Village is excited to announce that they were awarded over $1.6 Million from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund that will be used to rehabilitate Ontario Street in 2018.  The main components of this project are threefold: to resurface Ontario Street from Land of Lakes Public School to the Armstrong Bridge, to replace the existing sidewalks, and to create several other physical feature improvements.  The Village has held public consultation sessions to gather feedback regarding these improvements as well as notify the business community that plans are being put in place to reduce the impact to their businesses while the construction is underway.  While the project may have some short term challenges for affected businesses, there is an understanding that it is necessary to ensure progress and development.

With the impending improvements in place to Ontario Street, The Village Council and Staff are seizing the opportunity to continue building momentum by creating a Downtown Revitalization and Waterfront Master Plan.  The plan is being created by Karen Jones and Associates Consulting out of North Bay, which has decades of combined experience across downtown revitalization, community improvement planning, urban planning, community consultation and strategy development.  The plan will have two major focus areas:  the development of a comprehensive community improvement plan aimed at a partnership approach to façade improvements; and a series of themed visual components for connecting the waterfront to the downtown.  The plan is expected to be completed in early 2018 and contain a series of achievable action items that can be implemented over the next three to five years.
